The Scabal History // The Scabal story

Scabalt (Société Commerciale Anglo Belgo Allemande Luxembourgeoise), as we know it today, was founded in 1938 by Otto Hertz in Brussels, Belgium. Mr. Hertz brought together master tailors from all over the world, and by 1970 the company had grown into an international company with many partners all over Europe. Otto Hertz's most favored partner, JP Thissen has been appointed head of the company, today his son Gregor Thissen leads the world-renowned company as managing director and Stefano Rivera joined as CEO in 2013.

Scabal's heritage, an English mill dating back to the 16th century, is located in Huddersfield, home to traditional English fabric production. The clear waters of the River Colne allow the mill to handle the fabrics with the utmost care, and fabric production has been going on here ever since, with plenty of technological advances. After the company bought the Bower Roebuck mill in 1973, it soon became the first company to produce extremely fine fabrics in the Super 120 category. A decade later, gaining another first place, they became the first manufacturer of Super 150s fabric. By the end of the 20th century, the mill was the first to produce fabrics in the Super 200 category. These are now internationally recognized as an exceptional quality standard.

In 1971, a special collaboration was a big event in Scabal's life. Salvador Dali, surrealist master, created an exclusive series of paintings for the company. These 12 works depict the artist's unique vision of how fine-tuned clothing evolves in the 21st century. To this day, the works are fearfully preserved as treasures at the company and a separate fabric collection was also created inspired by the paintings.

Creativity and experimentation have accompanied the history of Scabal. They experiment with weaving techniques, technologies, and materials whenever possible, trying to cross boundaries. As a result, their finest fabric collections and special collections are born.

In 1972, an important decision was made in the life of the company: the opening of a store on the legendary Savile Row in London. The new store has moved under house no. 12, where it can still be found today. It is part of Scabal's philosophy to adhere to tradition to create modern. Thus, fabrics from traditional fabrics to completely modern collections can all be found in their offer.

Scabal's reputation spread extremely quickly, so soon Hollywood producers asked for costumes made specifically from Scabal fabrics for their actors. For example, Vito Corleone's famous tuxedo worn by Marlon Brando at the Godfather and almost all of Robert DeNiro's iconic 70 suits were made with the help of Scabal.

Scabal has always strived for innovation, as the company first started sorting its fabrics into bunches, today it is essential to organize fabrics in this way, but at the time it was revolutionary. Using super-fine wool from family farms, Scabal is at the forefront of fabric manufacturing innovation, combining traditional techniques and materials with modern technology for future generations.

As the styles evolve, the range of fabrics expands with new styles each season. They currently offer 5,000 luxury fabrics, with black definitely dominating the 2020 AW collections. Its dramatic effect is enhanced by the myriad shades of brown, from rust to camel and taupe to rich chocolate. Pegasus is the latest in Scabal's innovative range of fabrics. From the Venetian stripes of the Tornado to the striking patterns on Escape's fine cashmere, the new collections combine their expertise with the most essential needs of a gentleman. At Galamb tailoring, in addition to the highest quality, the meeting of tradition and modernity is a decade-old principle, so we have been working with Scabal fabrics from the very beginning.
